The plot repeatedly shifts back to Alita's childhood memory after the young Yoko (Alita) and her sisterly companion Erica were saved at the minefield by Gerda and later left in the care of an elderly wandering medic Finch, and the adventures the pair had to endure in order to survive in the chaotic Martian civil conflicts leading up to the Terraforming Wars. At the memorial site, she re-encounters her childhood friend and fellow Künstler Erica - the infamous assassin known as 'Frau X' - and is immediately drawn into a Martian power struggle. Three years after the 10th ZOTT, Alita visits Mars to honor the slaughtered inhabitants of an orphanage she lived at during childhood. The story of Mars Chronicles alternates between two timelines: ES 594, three years directly after the event of Last Order, when Alita returns to her home planet Mars for the first time in centuries and ES 373, during Alita's childhood as the young cyborg girl Yoko trying to survive in the war-torn Mars. Last, I feel like the level of detail in the drawing has dropped down, especially compared to the first cycle: there were much more details in the background, the inking was also way sharper. I’m also not a fan of Yoko’s origin story (she would be a tumor, like, wtf?). Good people systematically get screwed over, it’s like there’s just no hope in this cycle. I’m a little bit torn on the characters alignment: basically, bad people people survive only to inflict misery upon good people.
There were lots of fucked up things in the first cycles too, but it didn’t felt as bleak as Mars Chronicles (or maybe I’m getting old, I don’t know). All in all, the tone feels way darker and crueler compared to the other cycles (the torture scenes, the baron’s sister, the girls in the orphanage…). On the other hand, some aspects are really bothering me. I’m also surprised how much I grew attached to Erika’s character (she reminds me a bit of Yōjo Senki: Saga of Tanya the Evil). On one hand, there are quite a few emotional punchlines (Erika’s real memory of her parents, some events in the Baron Muster past.), making some of the scenes truly memorable. And boy do I have mixed feelings on this one (spoilers ahead).

Then I watched the movie (enjoyed it too), re-read the cycles and discovered the existence of Mars Chronicles. I read the two first cycles of Gunnm (Original and Last Order) a few years ago and love them both. I was looking for your opinion on Mars Chronicle.
